Abstract
System and device for and method of communicating according to Trellis Code of baseband signals chosen from a fixed set of baseband signal point. A first set of signal points define a first subconstellation, and a second set of signal points define a second subconstellation. The first subconstellation is characterized with a different minimum distance between adjacent signal points than the minimum distance for the second subconstellation. Under a PCM modem arrangement the first and second constellations respectively include set of signal points selected from the PSTN quantization rules, and the first subconstellation has a smaller minimum distance than the second. Information to be communicated is mapped to one of the first and second subconstellations. If the information maps to the first subconstellation, the information is transmitted according to a first transmission scheme; and if the information maps to the second subconstellation, the information is transmitted according to a second transmission scheme. Under a PCM modem arrangement, the first transmission scheme transmits information as coded information, for example, using a Trelli code, and the second transmission scheme transmits information as uncoded information. N-dimensional Trelli codes may be sued for the first transmission scheme and techniques are provided for recovering from lost synchronism and for avoiding catastrophic effects from lost synchronism.
