Abstract
The invention relates to a measuring device for measuring the tread or relief depth of a motor vehicle tyre comprising a measuring head. The measuring head comprises means (130) for positioning the measuring head in a defined position relative to the tread or relief surface of the motor vehicle tyre to be tested. A laser and a sensor unit are arranged in a common support body (96). The laser is arranged such that the laser beam (132) forms a small angle with the normal line of the tread or relief surface of the tyre permitting the laser beam (132) to impinge upon the bottom of a tread or relief groove of the tyre tread or relief for generating a light spot. The sensor unit is arranged to observe the position of the light spot. Image processing means are designed to generate, from position data of the sensor, measuring value indicative of the read or relief depth of the tread relief groove of the tyre tread or relief. A mirror is arranged to deflect the light originating from the light spot generated on the bottom of the tread or relief groove in a direction toward the sensor.
