A process for oxidizing H2S present at the concentration of 0.01 vol% to 20 vol% in a gas directly to sulphur, in which the H2S-containing gas and free-oxygen containing gas with molar ratio of O2: H2S at the range of 0.05 to 10 are contacted with a catalyst that can selectively oxidize H2S to sulphur at the contact temperature of 30 DEG C to 1000 DEG C, the oxidation catalyst is comprised of silicon carbide support and an active phase containing at least one metal in the form of an oxide, salt or sulphide and/or elemental state selected from Ni, Co, Fe, Cu, Sn, Mn, Mo, Cr, Ti, W, and V; the silicon carbide support accounting for at least 40% of the oxidation support by weight.
