Abstract
A process for cooling graphite electrodes used in melting and refining metal in an arc furnace and melting barrel, which is a process for cooling a vertical series of interconnected graphite electrodes, which comprises spraying a cooling liquid to at least one outer surface of a graphite electrode consisted of the upper portions of the series of graphite electrodes, the graphite electrodes connecting in series and going through a furnace cover of an arc furnace opening having a conduit for melting and refining a metal such as steel or a similar object, and extending into the conduit, in which the process comprises: introducing the cooling liquid in a horizontal direction or an upward or downward inclination angle of between 0 to 60 degrees; and simultaneously spraying the cooling liquid at a rate of 0.8 l/min to 40 l/min.
