Abstract

The invention relates to a modular method and device for the evaluation of the ability of biocide to penetrate biofilm, especially relates to the making of controlled thicknesses of biofilm. The main body of our invention consists of a petri dish and a thickness module for the making of controlled thicknesses of biofilm. The thickness module is attached to the cover of the petri dish by means of a locking mechanism that locks and unlocks through rotation. The locking mechanism consists of two parts: one part is attached to the thickness module, the other part is attached to the cover of the petri dish. The two parts fit together and will lock and unlock through rotating the thickness module and the cover of the petri dish one against the other. Additionally, the surface of the thickness module device being in contact with the growth culture is provided with a raised rim to allow for a greater degree of tolerance against over-pouring of gelatinous growth culture. By doing so we can ensure that the gelatinous growth culture will retain its integrity when the thickness module is removed, and in the growth culture indentations of different or identical depths are perfectly formed. As to the method of evaluating the ability of biocide to penetrate biofilm, the method comprises making biofilms of controlled thickness, immersing the biofilm in biocide, analyzing the remaining activity of the biocide and testing the biofilms for growth or no-growth.
