Abstract

An improved process for producing carbon fiber from textile grade polyacrylonitrile fiber, which comprises subjecting flame retardant polyacrylonitrile fiber with ring index of 45~65% to carbonization treatment, which is characterized in that the preparation of the flame retardant polyacrylonitrile fiber comprises the following steps: (a) stretching the polyacrylonitrile fiber, which has fineness of 2.0~3.0 denier, tenacity of 3.0~4.5 g/d and ring index of substantially zero, at 180~220 deg.C oxidizing atmosphere for 1.5~3.0 times; (b) oxidizing the stretched polyacrylonitrile fiber at 220~260 deg.C and substantially non-stretching and non-shrinking for 5~20 minutes to ring index of 4~10%; and (c) oxidizing the partially oxidized polyacrylonitrile fiber from (b) at 330~550 deg.C and substantially non-stretching and non-shrinking for 10~60 seconds to ring index of 45~65%.
