Abstract

The HEPA filter used in gas cleaning system of nuclear facility, is to remove the fine particles and nuclides. Since the spent Contaminated HEPA filter conditioning is tough and the storage requires large space, a method of compressive volume reduction is developed. The spent HEPA filter is compressed remotely to 1/11 of the original size in an air-tight apparatus. After the compression, the compressed filter cake is discharged to a 55 gallon waste drum and is embedded in concrete to a waste form. The waste form is then sent to the final disposal sitefor storage. This invention includes the method for compression of HEPA filter to a minimum volume, comprises HEPA filter charging, compression, and filter cake discharging sections, and the facility designed to implement this method remotely and in compliance with the radiation protection requirements.
