Abstract

A position detecting apparatus for a moving object, in which a plurality of main-address portion 13 is formed in tandem in at regular intervals on a main-rule 3 extending along a travelling rail 1 for a carrier (moving object) 2, and on a sub-rule 4 extending in parallel to the main-rule 3, there is formed a plurality of sub-address portion 14 in tandem at predetermined pitch dividing by n(=4) the pitch of the main-address portion 13. On the carrier, there are mounted m(=5) pieces of detector for main-rule 5a-5e in tandem at the same pitch intervals as that of the main-address portion 13, and n pieces of detector for sub-rule 8a-8d in tandem at a pitch interval (n+1)(=5) time as much as the pitch of the sub-address portion 14. A processing device 11 is provided so as to obtain, based on the outputs ofthe detectors for main-rule 5a-5e and the detectors for sub-rule 8a-8d, an absolute position of the carrier 2 with a precision equal to the pitch of the sub-address portion 14.
