Methods for the reductive decomposition of a chemical contaminant comprise combining at least one alkali or alkaline earth metal compound and the chemical contaminant to form a reaction mixture, wherein the reaction mixture further contains a hydrogen donor compound and a catalyst which will cause the formation of a free radical hydrogen ion. The methods further comprise heating the reaction mixture to a temperature in a predetermined range for a time sufficient to cause formation of a free radical hydrogen ions therein and effect reductive decomposition of the chemical contaminant. The method may be employed for the reductive decomposition of organic and inorganic compounds.
