Description

Inorganic light emitting diode display

The present disclosure relates to an inorganic light emitting diode display, and more particularly to a sub-pixel arrangement structure of an inorganic light emitting diode display.

With the rapid development of display technology, the current market demand for display panel performance is moving towards high resolution, high brightness and low power consumption. However, as the resolution of display panels increases, in order to display high resolution, the number of sub-pixels of the display panel will also increase, thereby increasing the manufacturing cost of the display panel. In order to reduce the manufacturing cost of the display panel and improve the image quality, the display device can use a special sub-pixel arrangement and an algorithm to improve the color resolution of the display panel.

Compared to the RGB stripe arrangement of traditional displays, the diamond arrangement of sub-pixels in the organic light-emitting diode (OLED) display application has been widely discussed. By increasing the area of red and blue sub-pixels and reducing the current density, the life of red and blue due to material characteristics can be extended, and the luminous area of red and blue can be extended. However, since the luminous area limits the current density, it is impossible to compensate for the brightness of red and blue with a higher current, and the diversity of sub-pixel arrangement is also reduced. In addition, since traditional liquid crystal displays (LCD) or organic light-emitting diodes (OLED) have a larger opening rate, it is more difficult to repair the display. Therefore, it is necessary to improve the display device so that the display device has properties such as a larger current density operating range, a greater diversity of sub-pixel arrangements, and a lower aperture ratio, so as to further improve color resolution, enhance image quality, and reduce the difficulty of maintenance.

According to some embodiments of the present disclosure, an inorganic light emitting diode (LED) display is provided, comprising: a first sub-unit and a second sub-unit, the first sub-unit comprising four first chips, the four first chips are arranged into a first rectangle and are located at the four corners of the first rectangle, the second sub-unit comprising four second chips, the four second chips are arranged into a second rectangle and are located at the four corners of the second rectangle, wherein the first rectangle and the second rectangle overlap each other and form an overlapping area, and in the horizontal direction, the vertical direction or both, there is no light emitting diode chip between any two adjacent ones of the four first chips.

The following describes the light emitting device and its forming method of the disclosed embodiment. However, it should be understood that the disclosed embodiment provides many suitable inventive concepts and can be implemented in a wide variety of specific contexts. The disclosed specific embodiment is only used to illustrate the manufacture and use of the invention in a specific method, and is not used to limit the scope of the invention. Furthermore, the same reference numerals are used in the drawings and descriptions of the disclosed embodiment to represent the same or similar components.

The terms "about", "approximately", "generally" and the like mentioned in the specification generally mean within 20% of a given value or range, preferably within 10%, and more preferably within 5%, or within 3%, or within 2%, or within 1%, or within 0.5%. It should be noted that the quantities provided in the specification are approximate quantities, that is, in the absence of specific description of "about", "approximately", "generally", the meaning of "about", "approximately", "generally" can still be implied.

According to some embodiments of the present disclosure, an inorganic light emitting diode display includes a red inorganic light emitting diode chip (hereinafter referred to as red chip), a blue inorganic light emitting diode chip (hereinafter referred to as blue chip), and a green inorganic light emitting diode chip (hereinafter referred to as green chip) with the largest number. One of the characteristics of the embodiments of the present disclosure is that the number of green chips is greater than the number of red chips and the number of blue chips, respectively. The sub-pixels used in existing displays (sub-pixels refer to the smallest unit for displaying an image, such as green chips) are generally arranged in RGB stripes, using the same number of RGB chips to form a complete pixel. However, in the display provided by the embodiments of the present disclosure, by increasing the number of green chips and adjusting the minimum distance between chips of different colors, not only the resolution can be further improved, but also the image quality can be improved.

每個發光二極體晶片102各自具有第一電極110a(例如正極)與第二電極110b(例如負極)。 FIG. 1 shows a cross-sectional schematic diagram of an inorganic light emitting diode display 10 according to an embodiment of the present disclosure. In FIG. 1 , the inorganic light emitting diode display 10 includes a substrate 100 and a plurality of light emitting diode chips 102 arranged in a two-dimensional array on the substrate 100 at intervals. To simplify the diagram, only three light emitting diode chips 102 are shown in the figure, but the present disclosure is not limited thereto. Each light emitting diode chip 102 has a first electrode 110a (e.g., a positive electrode) and a second electrode 110b (e.g., a negative electrode). In some embodiments, the polarity of the first electrode 110a and the second electrode 110b can be set according to different types of LED chips 102. For example, in some embodiments, the first electrode 110a can be a negative electrode, and the second electrode 110b can be a positive electrode. The first electrode 110a and the second electrode 110b are arranged on the same side of the LED chip 102 close to the substrate 100 (which can be called the back side). For example, in some embodiments, the side of the LED chip 102 away from the substrate 100 is the light emitting side (which can be called the front side), and the first electrode 110a and the second electrode 110b are arranged on the opposite side of the light emitting side of the LED chip 102. In some embodiments, the substrate 100 may be a printed circuit board (PCB), a thin film transistor glass (TFT glass), a complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) substrate or other suitable materials, but not limited thereto. The LED chip 102 includes a green chip 102g, a red chip 102r, and a blue chip 102b. In some embodiments, the material of the LED chip 102 may include an inorganic semiconductor material, such as a III-V compound, a II-VI compound, or other suitable materials, but not limited thereto. In some embodiments, the III-V compound may be a gallium nitride (GaN-based) material, a gallium arsenide (GaAs-based) material, or an arsenic phosphide (InP-based) material, and the II-VI compound may be a zinc sulfide (ZnS-based) material or a cadmium selenide (CdSe-based) material.

In some embodiments, the material of the first electrode 110a and the second electrode 110b may include metal or metal alloy. For example, the metal material of the first electrode 110a and the second electrode 110b may include: copper (Cu), aluminum (Al), indium (In), tin (Sn), gold (Au), platinum (Pt), zinc (Zn), silver (Ag), titanium (Ti), nickel (Ni) or a combination thereof, but is not limited thereto.

FIG. 2 is a schematic diagram showing a sub-pixel arrangement structure of the inorganic light emitting diode display 10 of FIG. 1. In FIG. 2, a green chip 102g, a red chip 102r, and a blue chip 102b are periodically arranged on a substrate 100. In some embodiments, the light emitting diode chips 102 are arranged to extend along a first direction D1 and a second direction D2 perpendicular to the first direction D1, as shown in FIG. 2. Because the human eye is more sensitive to the green wavelength, reducing the green spacing can effectively make the human eye see more dense sub-pixel information, so in the first direction D1, the minimum spacing P sub_g between two adjacent green chips 102g is set to be smaller than the minimum spacing P sub_r between two adjacent red chips 102r, and the minimum spacing P sub_g between two adjacent green chips 102g is smaller than the minimum spacing P sub_b between two adjacent blue chips 102b. The above sub-pixel arrangement structure can improve color resolution, provide better image quality with fewer chips, and reduce costs.

Since the human eye's perception of color images is mainly dominated by the color borrowing mechanism and the visual limit mechanism, the effects of color borrowing and light mixing can be achieved by adjusting the minimum distance between adjacent chips. For example, in order to satisfy the color borrowing mechanism at the same time: And the visual limit mechanism: In this case, the minimum spacing between adjacent color chips can be adjusted to satisfy the following relationship: In order to achieve improved color resolution and better image quality. The above CPD (cycles per degree) is the unit of spatial frequency. Spatial frequency is defined as the number of black and white stripe cycles that can be identified within the human eye field of vision per degree of viewing angle. It is related to the stripe spacing and the distance between the human eye and the display. For example, when the stripe spacing is P and the distance between the human eye and the display is D, the angular frequency f can be defined as follows: When the angular frequency f(P) is between 15CPD and 30CPD, the color borrowing mechanism can be achieved. Specifically, in order to allow the red chip 102r and the blue chip 102b on the display to lend color to the surrounding green chip 102g, the minimum spacing P sub_r between two adjacent red chips 102r and the minimum spacing P sub_b between two adjacent blue chips 102b can be adjusted between 15CPD and 30CPD. In some embodiments, only the smallest angular frequency between the red chip 102r and the blue chip 102b is considered. When the angular frequency f(P) is between 30CPD and 60CPD, the visual limit mechanism can be achieved. Specifically, in order to achieve the light mixing effect of the red chip 102r, the blue chip 102b, and the green chip 102g on the display, the minimum spacing P sub_r between two adjacent red chips 102r, the minimum spacing P sub_b between two adjacent blue chips 102b, and the minimum spacing P sub_g between two adjacent green chips 102g can be adjusted between 30CPD and 60CPD. In some embodiments, since the minimum distance P sub_g between two adjacent green chips 102g is the smallest in the first direction D1, only the angular frequency f(P sub_g ) of the green chip 102g is considered to be between 30 CPD and 60 CPD.

Continuing to refer to FIG. 2, in some embodiments, a plurality of green chips 102g, at least one red chip 102r, and at least one blue chip 102b together constitute a minimum repeating unit (one point unit) 104. The above-mentioned minimum repeating unit 104 is a rectangle, and is repeatedly arranged in two dimensions to form an inorganic light-emitting diode display 10. It is particularly noted that in other embodiments, the minimum repeating unit 104 can be a rectangle, a triangle, a polygon, a circle, etc., but the present disclosure is not limited thereto. In each minimum repeating unit 104, the number of green chips 102g is the largest, that is, the number G of the green chips 102g is greater than the number R of the red chips 102r, and the number G of the green chips 102g is greater than the number B of the blue chips 102b. In some embodiments, the number R of red chips 102r in the minimum repetitive unit 104 is greater than the number B of blue chips 102b. In some embodiments, the number R of red chips 102r in the minimum repetitive unit 104 is the same as the number B of blue chips 102b. Since the ratio of various color chips in the LED chip 102 in the minimum repetitive unit 104 is no longer 1:1:1 (RGB), which is different from the traditional chip arrangement, in application, the algorithm is used in advance to recalculate the image according to the chip ratio, and finally, according to the calculated result, the image information is transmitted to the LED chip 102 in the minimum repetitive unit 104 to display the complete image. In some embodiments, the algorithm can adopt the common sub-pixel rendering technology.

Continuing with reference to FIG. 2 , in some embodiments, each LED chip 102 in the minimum repeating unit 104 has substantially the same size. For example, LED chips 102 of different colors have substantially the same top view area. In some embodiments, the minimum repeating unit 104 has a unit area Sp , and each green chip 102g, red chip 102r, and blue chip 102b has a light emitting area Sg , Sr , and Sb , respectively. In some embodiments, the light-emitting areas of chips of different colors are the same, for example, S g =S r =S b . Therefore, compared with the traditional OLED that achieves display function by using different sub-pixel sizes, there is no need to adjust different current densities according to different luminous efficiencies of organic light-emitting bodies, so that the life of sub-pixels of different colors is equivalent, reducing design difficulties.

In some embodiments, the aperture ratio A of the inorganic LED display 10 is less than 30%, as shown in FIG. 2 . The aperture ratio A is defined as the ratio of the total light-emitting area of the LED chip 102 to the minimum repeating unit 104, and satisfies the following relationship: Wherein, G, R, and B are respectively the number of green chips 102g, the number of red chips 102r, and the number of blue chips 102b in the minimum repeating unit 104. Compared with the opening ratio design of the traditional liquid crystal display (LCD) or organic light emitting diode (OLED) of 30% to 90%, the present disclosure can provide a lower opening ratio, which is conducive to the inspection and repair of the light emitting diode chip 102 in the inorganic light emitting diode display 10.

FIGS. 3A to 3B are schematic diagrams showing the arrangement of the LED chips 102 in the minimum repeating unit 104 according to various embodiments of the present disclosure. Referring to FIG. 3A , in some embodiments, the minimum repeating unit 104 includes a plurality of sub-units 106, for example, a first sub-unit 106a and a second sub-unit 106b. The first sub-unit 106a (dashed box) is composed of a portion of the green chip 102g, and the second sub-unit 106b (dotted box) is composed of the remaining green chip 102g and the red chip 102r and the blue chip 102b. It is particularly noted that the sub-unit 106 covers the top view geometric center C1 of the minimum repeating unit 104, as shown in FIG. 3A .

In some embodiments, the top-view shape geometric center C2 of the first sub-unit 106a (dashed line) may be misaligned (meaning not overlapped) with the chip 102 of the second sub-unit 106b (dotted line), as shown in FIG. 3A. In some embodiments, the top-view shape geometric center C3 of the second sub-unit 106b may be misaligned with the chip 102 of the first sub-unit 106a. In other embodiments, the top-view shape geometric center C2 of the first sub-unit 106a may overlap with the chip 102 of the second sub-unit 106b, and the top-view shape geometric center C3 of the second sub-unit 106b may overlap with the chip 102 of the first sub-unit, as shown in FIG. 3B. At this time, six green chips 102g form a pentagonal first sub-unit 106a (dashed line), and one red chip and one blue chip form a rectangular second sub-unit 106b (dotted line). In this case, in terms of the entire display, the red chips 102r and the blue chips 102b are evenly distributed around the larger number of green chips 102g. Compared to FIG. 3A , where the top-view geometric center C2 of the first subunit 106a is misaligned with the chip 102 of the second subunit 106b, in FIG. 3B , the top-view geometric center C2 of the first subunit 106a overlaps with the chip 102 in the second subunit 106b, and the top-view geometric center C3 of the second subunit 106b overlaps with the chip 102 in the first subunit 106a. Therefore, the red chip 102r and the blue chip 102b can lend color to the surrounding green chip 102g more evenly, thereby improving image resolution and quality. It is particularly noted that the first sub-unit 106a and the second sub-unit 106b have an overlapping area, and the overlapping area includes the top view geometric center C2 of the first sub-unit 106a, so in addition to improving the resolution, the image quality can also be improved.

Referring to FIGS. 4A-4B , according to various embodiments of the present disclosure, an embodiment in which the ratio of the number of red, green and blue chips (RGB) is 1:2:1 in the minimum repeating unit 104 is shown. First, referring to FIG. 4A , in some embodiments, the minimum repeating unit 104 includes 2 green chips, 1 red chip and 1 blue chip. The 2 green chips are arranged to form a rectangular first sub-unit 106a (dashed line), and the 1 red chip and the 1 blue chip are arranged to form a rectangular second sub-unit 106b (dotted line). The first sub-unit 106a and the second sub-unit 106b have an overlapping area, and the overlapping area includes the top view shape geometric center C1 of the first sub-unit 106a. As shown in FIG. 4A , in this embodiment, since each red chip has the same distance (L1=L2) from the surrounding adjacent red chips, the red chip 102r can evenly lend color to the surrounding green chips 102g. In addition to improving color resolution, the image quality in the first direction D1 and the second direction D2 is proportionally increased.

Referring to FIG. 4B , in some embodiments, the minimum repeating unit 104 includes 4 green chips, 2 red chips, and 2 blue chips. Since the 4 green chips are arranged to form a first sub-unit 106a (dashed line) of a parallelogram, and the 2 red chips and 2 blue chips are arranged to form a second sub-unit 106b (dotted line) of a parallelogram, and each red chip has a different distance from the surrounding adjacent red chips (L1'≠L2'), due to the distance difference in the first direction D1 and the second direction D2, the image quality effects in the two directions are unequal in proportion. With the calculation of the algorithm, the image quality in a single direction can be more prominent, and the color resolution can also be improved at the same time.

Referring to FIG. 5 , according to various embodiments of the present disclosure, an embodiment is shown in which the ratio of the number of red, green, and blue chips (RGB) in the minimum repeating unit 104 is 1:3:1. In some embodiments, the minimum repeating unit 104 includes 3 green chips, 1 red chip, and 1 blue chip. The 3 green chips are arranged to form a triangular first sub-unit 106a (dashed line), and the 1 red chip and the 1 blue chip are arranged to form a rectangular second sub-unit 106b (dotted line). As shown in FIG. 5 , the first subunit 106a and the second subunit 106b have an overlapping area. Since the overlapping area includes the top-view geometric center C2 of the first subunit 106a, the first subunit 106a and the second subunit 106b are roughly distributed around the top-view geometric center C1 of the minimum repeating unit 104. The red chip 102r and the blue chip 102b can evenly lend color to the surrounding green chip 102g, thereby improving the color resolution and enhancing the image quality.

In some embodiments, the minimum repeating units 104 may not be adjacent to each other, but may be arranged in rows and columns in an alternating manner in the IL-LED display 10. By adjusting the spacing between the minimum repeating units 104 so that the minimum spacing P sub_g of adjacent green chips 102g in the first direction is substantially the same, the color resolution may be improved and the image quality may be enhanced.

Referring to FIGS. 6A-6C , according to various embodiments of the present disclosure, an embodiment in which the ratio of the number of red, green and blue chips (RGB) in the minimum repeating unit 104 is 1:4:1 is shown. First, referring to FIG. 6A , in some embodiments, the minimum repeating unit 104 is kite-shaped, and is staggered in rows and columns to form an inorganic light-emitting diode display 10. The minimum repeating unit 104 includes 4 green chips, 1 red chip and 1 blue chip. The 4 green chips are arranged to form a diamond-shaped first sub-unit 106a (dashed line), and the 1 red chip and the 1 blue chip are arranged to form a rectangular second sub-unit 106b (dotted line). As shown in FIG. 6A , the first subunit 106a and the second subunit 106b have an overlapping area. Since the overlapping area includes the top-view geometric center C2 of the first subunit 106a, the first subunit 106a and the second subunit 106b are roughly distributed around the top-view geometric center C1 of the minimum repeating unit 104. The red chip 102r and the blue chip 102b can evenly lend color to the surrounding green chip 102g, thereby improving color resolution and image quality at the same time.

6B , in some embodiments, the minimum repeating unit 104 includes 8 green chips, 2 red chips, and 2 blue chips. The 4 green chips are arranged to form a rectangular first sub-unit 106a (dashed line), the 2 red chips and the 2 blue chips are arranged to form a rectangular second sub-unit 106b (dotted line), and the remaining 4 green chips are arranged to form a rectangular third sub-unit 106c (dotted line), and the above sub-units (106a, 106b, 106c) partially overlap each other.

Referring to FIG. 6C , in some embodiments, the minimum repeating unit 104 includes 4 green chips, 1 red chip, and 1 blue chip. The 4 green chips are arranged to form a rectangular first sub-unit 106a, and the 1 red chip and the 1 blue chip are arranged to form a rectangular second sub-unit 106b. The first sub-unit 106a and the second sub-unit 106b are roughly distributed around the top view geometric center C1 of the minimum repeating unit 104, as shown in FIG. 6C . It is worth noting that the minimum repeating units 104 are adjacent to each other and are arranged in rows and columns in an alternating manner in the inorganic light emitting diode display 10.

Referring to Figures 7A-7C, the difference in image quality due to the different chip arrangements between the embodiments of the present disclosure and the traditional display is simulated by computer. Figures 7A and 7C are computer simulated images formed by sub-pixels arranged in a traditional RGB stripe. The difference is that the image resolution of Figure 7C is twice that of Figure 7A. This difference comes from the fact that the number of chips (sub-pixels) used in Figure 7C is twice the number of chips (sub-pixels) used in Figure 7A. Figure 7B is a computer simulated image formed by sub-pixels with a ratio of red, green, and blue chips (RGB) of 1:2:1 (such as the embodiment of Figure 4A) according to some embodiments of the present disclosure. Comparing Figure 7B with Figure 7A, it can be clearly seen that the resolution of Figure 7B is higher than that of Figure 7A. The embodiment of FIG. 7B of the present disclosure can increase the resolution to a level equivalent to that of a conventional RGB stripe arrangement (as shown in FIG. 7C ) that requires twice the number of chips (sub-pixels) by only providing one more green chip in the minimum repeating unit 104, and further improve the image quality.

It should be noted that the present disclosure generally describes the sub-pixel arrangement structure of the inorganic light emitting diode display. Other sub-pixel arrangement structures can be used. For example, different types of inorganic light emitting diode chips can be used, inorganic light emitting diode chips with different light emitting areas can be used, fewer or additional green chips, red chips, and blue chips can be used, and the relationship between the minimum spacing between green chips and the minimum spacing between red or blue chips can be adjusted according to design requirements to form an inorganic light emitting diode display.

It should be understood that the scope of the present invention is not limited to the technical solutions formed by the specific combination of the above technical features, but also covers other technical solutions formed by any combination of the above technical features or their equivalent features. The above embodiments can be combined arbitrarily to form new embodiments, and all new embodiments formed by the combination are within the protection scope of the present invention.

The arrangement of the sub-pixels of the display disclosed in the present invention can be based on the design requirements of the display, using the characteristic that the human eye is more sensitive to the green light band, and the maximum number of green chips can be set in the display to improve the image resolution and image quality of the display. For example, the display can be divided into minimum repeating units arranged in parallel and/or staggered rows and columns, and then red chips, blue chips and green chips are set in each minimum repeating unit, and the total number of green chips is greater than the total number of red chips and the total number of blue chips. The arrangement of chips in the minimum repeating unit can distribute the largest number of green chips roughly evenly in the minimum repeating unit, and distribute the red chips and blue chips roughly near the green chips in the display. For example, the minimum repeating unit can include multiple sub-units, and the sub-units are roughly divided into two categories, first-category sub-units and second-category sub-units. The first type of sub-unit includes at least two single-color chips, such as two green chips, or more green chips, but not limited thereto. In some embodiments, there may be multiple first type of sub-units, such as two or more first type of sub-units. The second type of sub-unit includes at least two heterochromatic chips, such as one red chip and one blue chip. In some embodiments, the second type of sub-unit may include green chips, such as one red chip, one blue chip, and two green chips. By setting the largest number of green chips in the display and adjusting the minimum spacing between the green chips, the image resolution and image quality can be improved at the same time, and the use of chips can be reduced, thereby reducing costs.
