Abstract

Lightning dynamics can be visualized by using high efficient computer animations, which enables the power system dispatchers to effectively monitor the lightning phenomenon and further to enhance the system reliability. A set of human machine interface (HMI) for monitoring the lightning for power system operations and controls has been developed. The lightning data including lightning intensity, lightning repetition level, and lightning polarization are visualized and integrated with geographic information of transmission system and its occurrence time and location. Several lightning visualization modules are designed. Performance of these modules are tested and verified by using simulated and actual lightning measurements. The data visualization based HMI could provide the dispatchers adequate information and an intuitive way to quickly know the status of the lightning to timely decide proper control actions for avoiding the blackout incident due to the lightning or reducing its impacts.
