Abstract
Disclosed is a hot cathode discharge lamp comprising a glass bulb whose cross section perpendicular to the tube axis has a flattened shape, and electrode coils arranged within the glass bulb so that the axes thereof are aligned along the major diameter of the flattened shape. The length L of the electrode coils in the axis direction satisfies the following relation: L2 < L < L1, with L1 being the major inner diameter of the flattened shape of the glass bulb and L2 being the minor inner diameter thereof. Also disclosed is a backlight unit comprising the hot cathode discharge lamp as a light source.
