Abstract

A recording/reproducing device that can set a recording parameter easily at a high speed is provided for writing and reading data expressed by combinations of mark lengths and spaces formed on a recording medium. The recording/reproducing device is provided with an edge shift detector (24) for measuring an edge shift quantity of the mark formed on the recording medium by using a data signal for every pair of the mark length and the space length. The recording/reproducing device is also provided with a function of setting the recording parameter for each pair of the mark length and the space length, based on the measured edge shift quantity. In the case of performing recording wherein a speed of recording on the recording medium having a free recording area at an outer circumference position changes by the zone of the recording medium, a test area (51) on the outer circumference is used, and a phase error quantity of a certain prescribed minimum recording parameter of a high double-speed recording section is measured and the recording parameter is set.
