Abstract

The present invention relates to a process for the preparation of 2-amino-4-(methylthio)butanoic acid (known as methionine) by ammoniacal hydrolysis of an aqueous solution comprising 2-hydroxy-4-(methylthio)butyronitrile (known as HMTBN). This hydrolysis takes place continuously, without isolation of the intermediate products, at a temperature not exceeding 250 DEG C, starting from an NH3/HMTBN molar proportion of between 5 and 50 and from a CO2/HMTBN molar proportion of between 1 and 10. According to this process, an outlet mixture comprising at least methionine, carbon dioxide and ammonia in the dissolved form and products derived from HMTBN is obtained; and the said products derived from HMTBN, the carbon dioxide and the ammonia are recycled to the ammoniacal hydrolysis.
