Abstract
An object of the present invention is to provide a method for decomposing an ester oligomer (high boiling compound) containing succinic acid and/or 4-hydroxybutyric acid and 1,4-butanediol as constituents, particularly a high boiling compound (ester oligomer) formed as a by-product in a method for producing γ-butyrolactone, and to provide a method for producing a group of industrially useful C4 products particularly γ-butyrolactone. A method for decomposing an ester oligomer, which comprises bringing an aqueous solution, of an ester oligomer containing succinic acid and/or 4-hydroxybutyric acid and 1,4-butanediol as constituents into contact with a solid acid catalyst with heating to decompose the ester oligomer into the respective constituents and to convert 1,4-butanediol into tetrahydrofuran, and/or in a case where 4-hydroxybuturic acid is contained as the constituent of the ester oligomer, to convert 4-hydroxybutyric acid into γ-butyrolactone.
