Abstract
The invention describes a process for reducing the number of surface defects during production of float glass, in which a hot shielding gas stream is passed over the free surface of the molten metal of the float bath from the direction of the glass ribbon towards the side wall of the float chamber, and the gas stream laden with the impurities that have evaporated from the metal bath is removed through openings in the region of the side wall of the float chamber.
