Abstract
This invention relates to a vertical axial wind engine, including a spindle perpendicular to the ground, a transmission mechanism installed under the spindle for delivering the generated kinetic energy to a device that is capable of generating electricity, and at least one airfoil supporting frame and one airfoil. Each supporting frame is mounted on the spindle at its center. The supporting frame has airfoil installation spaces symmetrically located inside the frame in the direction parallel to the spindle. The airfoil has two corresponding pivots that are pivotally installed in the airfoil installation space in the side opposing to the spindle. There is an elastic airfoil retainer for each airfoil installed between the airfoil and its supporting frame at the location far from the pivot axis. The elastic retainer is used to constrain the movement of the airfoil so that the airfoil can have a maximum wind cross section area to fully subject the wind force when in upwind position, and have a minimum wind cross section area to reduce wind drag when in leeward position. Therefore, the wind force applied on the airfoils can be transformed efficiently to mechanical torque for driving the wind engine. On the other hand, if the wind force applied on the airfoil is greater than a preset value, the retainer will release the airfoil automatically and allow the airfoil turn to a minimum wind cross section area so as to reduce wind force and to avoid any damages on the supporting frame, airfoil, or other parts under high wind and high-speed rotation.
