Abstract

An ion generator that achieves superior air purification effect by generating ions of high concentration, and an air conditioning apparatus employing such an ion generator are provided. The ion generator (17) includes opposite electrodes with a dielectric (13) therebetween to generate ions by applying a positive voltage that varies over time or a negative voltage that varies over time across the electrodes. The maximum value of the rising rate or dropping rate of the voltage that varies over time is preferably at least 150V/msec. The waveform of the voltage that varies over time is preferably an overlapping waveform of a direct current wave and a waveform that varies over time. The ion generator is preferably applicable to an air conditioning apparatus (11) that releases positive ions and/or negative ions into the air.
