This film exhibits a high oxygen transmission rate (OTR) ranging from 3,000 to 24,000 ml/m²/day and a carbon dioxide transmission rate (CO2TR) from 6,000 to 96,000 ml/m²/day. The film maintains comparable strength to commonly used commercial packaging films, has a thickness of 20-50 micrometers (microns), is transparent (light transmittance greater than 85%), and exhibits minimal fogging during use as packaging for fresh fruits and vegetables. Applications of this invented packaging film include packaging various fresh fruits and vegetables such as chili peppers, kale, basil, holy basil, bananas, and mangoes, among others. To extend the shelf life of fresh fruits and vegetables, the packaging film described in this invention can also be applied to other products requiring preservation under modified atmosphere conditions, such as fresh flowers, pre-cut fruits and vegetables, fresh food, or other processed agricultural products. The plastic packaging film, which effectively extends the shelf life and maintains the quality of fresh produce, especially tropical fruits and vegetables, as disclosed in this invention, relies on the principle that the film has a higher oxygen permeability than commercially available plastic packaging films in the Thai industry. The packaging film is formulated with polyethylene or a blend of basic and special grade polyethylene, or other polymers with good oxygen permeability, such as polyethylene synthesized and structure-controlled by metallocene catalysts or ethylene vinyl acetate, etc., along with the use of additives (or inorganic fillers) in various proportions, and the control of the film structure through the manufacturing process, as detailed in the invention. The film exhibits high oxygen permeability, or a wide range of Oxygen Transmission Rate (OTR) from 3,000 to 24,000 cc/m2.day. The carbon dioxide transmission rate (CO2TR) ranges from 6,000 to 96,000 cc/m2.day. The film has comparable strength to commonly used commercial packaging films, a thickness of 20-50 µm, is transparent (light transmission greater than 85%), and exhibits minimal fogging during use as packaging for fresh fruits and vegetables. The application of this high-oxygen permeable packaging film for packaging various fresh fruits and vegetables, such as chili peppers, kale, basil, holy basil, bananas, and mangoes, can extend the shelf life of fresh produce under optimal temperature conditions. The shelf life can be increased 2-5 times by utilizing the principle that the film can create a balanced modified atmosphere and maintain optimal humidity levels (relative humidity above 90 percent) inside the packaging. In addition to extending the shelf life of fresh fruits and vegetables, this innovative packaging film can be applied to other products that require storage under a modified atmosphere, such as fresh flowers, ready-to-eat cut fruits and vegetables, fresh food, or other processed agricultural products.
