Claims (22)

Fabric softener compounds for washing cycles, unit usage size, for softening or conditioning fabrics in the washing cycle of an automatic washing machine. The unit usage size mentioned consists of (a) a granulated fabric softener compound in sufficient quantity to achieve a unit usage size capable of providing effective fabric softening or conditioning in the washing cycle of the said washing machine; and which the said granulated fabric softener compound consists of activated montmorillonite clay selected to have the following initial properties: (i) a montmorillonite content of at least 85%; and (ii) when activated with sodium ions, the said clay is dried and ground into particles, and the said ground particles do not swell more than approximately 2.5 times within 24 hours when added to deionized water at room temperature; and which the said montmorillonite clay is activated by a process consisting of the following sequence of steps: (a) drying the said clay to the required amount of montmorillonite; (a) extrusion of the dried substance through a mold to form a wetting agent; (c) reducing the moisture content of the aforementioned wetting agent from approximately 10% to approximately 14% by weight; and (d) calcination at temperatures of approximately 120°C to approximately 250°C.
