This polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis system consists of two basins containing conductive solutions. The two basins are connected by a plastic sheet. Both the upper and lower basins have electrodes, which can be used as either positive or negative electrodes. In use, a glass plate with the gel in the center is clamped to the upper basin, and its lower end is immersed in the solution of the lower basin. A DC current from the power supply flows between the electrodes of the upper and lower basins, through the solutions in both basins and the gel plate. A unique feature of this system is that the electrodes in contact with the solutions in the basins are made of graphite rods, making them resistant to corrosion and generating minimal heat during operation.
