A disposable diaper consists of a compact outer covering with an anterior waist section, a posterior waist section, and a crotch section extending between the anterior and posterior waist sections to form the waist opening and a pair of leg openings. It also includes a separate absorbent layer. This absorbent layer consists of a permeable top layer, an impermeable back layer, and an absorbent core located between the top and back layers. The absorbent layer is positioned lengthwise on the inside of the outer covering in the crotch area and extends to the anterior and posterior waist sections. While the outer covering is vertically stretchable within the diaper, the absorbent layer is not vertically stretchable and is attached to the inside surface of the outer covering against the anterior and posterior waist openings by a non-vertically stretchable suspender. This suspender is pleated in a circular fashion around the waist and can be flattened vertically.
