Abstract

The back portion for absorbent devices such as disposable diapers or sanitary pads consists of two interlocking layers. The first layer, which does not come into contact with the wearer's skin, should consist of a polymer film or similar layer that is impermeable to liquid. The second layer, also made of a polymer film, should be permeable to liquid by arranging numerous relatively small bumps, each end perforated, arranged transversely across the entire surface area. These perforated bumps, resembling miniature volcanoes in cross-section, give the customer a highly tactile impression, sometimes described as "silky." In this invention's back portion, the second layer is modified so that the miniature volcano-like peaks of the second layer comprise the uncovered portion of the back portion. This reduces the surface area of contact between the back portion and the wearer's skin. In a particularly effective manner of this invention, the second layer, when expanded, becomes visible to the naked eye and creates a three-dimensional pattern in its surface, thus increasing the amount of space between the wearer's skin and the first, impermeable layer of the constructed back portion. The small holes in the second layer are considered to prevent skin blockage by allowing air circulation between the first, permeable layer of the back portion. Impermeable to the wearer's skin, this influence is further enhanced when the first layer is visibly expanded to increase the amount of fluid present between the wearer's skin and the first layer through which the fluid permeates. The reduced contact surface and increased airflow between the back and the wearer's skin reduce the tendency for the back to sweat and become sticky against the wearer's skin.
