This process involves minimal additional reagent use, produces virtually no waste by-products, and allows for the reuse of alkali and acid values. The method involves the creation of diammonium succinate using one of several materials with ammonium ions as the primary component, maintaining a neutral pH of 8 in the fermenter, or by replacing the cations of the succinate salt created in the fermenter with ammonium cations. The diammonium succinate can then be reacted with sulfate ions, for example, by combining diammonium succinate with ammonium bisulfate and/or sulfuric acid at a sufficiently low pH, to yield succinic acid and ammonium sulfate. Ideally, ammonium sulfate is thermally separated into ammonia and succinic acid. Ammonium bisulfate and succinic acid can be purified using ethanol dissolution. Filtration, refluxing, and reuse processes are also feasible.
