An oil-in-water emulsion suitable for topical application to human skin consists of (by weight of emulsion): (1) 5 to 40% vegetable oil; (2) 0.7 to 12% emulsifier, consisting of a mixture of soap and soap-derived fatty acids, with fatty acids present in 35 to 65% by weight of the mixture, soap in 0.35 to 8% by weight of the emulsion, and fatty acids in 0.35 to 6% by weight of the emulsion; (3) the remainder in the emulsion, which is not 100% water, contains emulsion adjuncts. The oil and emulsifier combine to form a fatty composition consisting of (a) 65 to 97% by weight of vegetable oil; (b) 0.5 to 23% by weight of soap; and (c) 2 to 12% by weight of soap-derived fatty acids.

The process for preparing the emulsion as defined in Claim 1 consists of the following steps: (1) Preparation of a dispersion consisting of soap, water, and mineral acid at a temperature of 60 to 100 °C. The amount of acid is sufficient to make only a portion of the soap acidic; (2) Addition of oil to the dispersion containing soap and the fatty acid derived from the soap, and mixing while maintaining the temperature between 60 and 100 °C to form an emulsion; (3) Cooling of the emulsion and packaging into containers.

The process for preparing the emulsion as described in any one of the claims 1 through 7 consists of the following steps: (1) Preparation of a dispersion containing soap, a humectant, a chelating agent, and water by mixing at a temperature between 80 and 90 °C until all constituents are in solution; (2) Dispersion of a thickener into the resulting solution, with the thickener partially dispersed in the oil, while maintaining the temperature between 80 and 90 °C; (3) Addition of a sufficient amount of mineral acid to the dispersion to acidify only a portion of the soap, and the remaining oil and an antioxidant are added; (4) Mixing at a temperature between 80 and 90 °C to achieve sufficient shear force to form an emulsion; (5) Cooling the emulsion to a temperature not exceeding 50 °C and adding a preservative and fragrance; (6) Final filling of the resulting emulsion into containers.
