A sanitary pad consists of: a base layer constructed from a permeable top layer, an impermeable back layer, and an absorbent core positioned between the permeable top layer and the impermeable back layer. This base layer has a top surface, opposing outer sides extending longitudinally along the pad, and opposing longitudinal ends extending transversely along the pad. A pair of barrier plates are constructed on the top surface of the opposing outer sides to extend along the opposing outer sides between the opposing transverse ends. Each barrier plate in this pair has a fixed edge extending longitudinally and a free edge extending longitudinally. A pair of opposing longitudinal ends are attached to the top surface of the base layer only at the fixed edge and the opposing longitudinal end of the barrier plate. The opposing end of each barrier plate is attached flat to the base layer. The upper surface of the transverse base piece spans the entire width of each sidewall. Such free edge of each sidewall of a pair of sidewalls can extend transversely across the base piece in order to protrude beyond the opposite transverse edge of the base piece when fitted by a wearer.

The sanitary pads according to claim 1, where each of the said barrier sheets is folded back onto itself along the fold line which extends in the longitudinal direction of the said base piece in order to separate each of the said barrier sheets between the said fixed edge and the said free edge, so that the said free edge is drawn outward in the said transverse direction of the said base piece.
