Abstract

The image signal processing system produces an output signal suitable for creating a closed description screen and responds to the user's "freeze" command to modify the set of output signals so that the existing closed description area on the screen remains unchanged. The system provides the user with several options for freezing the image, including freezing only the description title, freezing the image on the screen, and freezing both the screen and the screen description.

Claims (8)

1. A television set that receives an input signal containing image information, audio information associated with such image information, and data representing such audio information; the television set comprises a control pathway for processing such data integrated into the input signal to produce the first image signal component, which represents the visible representation of the audio information associated with such image information, and a signal processor for processing the image information signal integrated into the input signal to produce the second image signal component, and for combining the first and second image signal components to produce an output image signal that includes the first and second image signal components; this output image signal is suitable for pairing with a display device to produce a displayed image with a first area displaying the visible representation of the audio information associated with such image information, and a second area displaying the image information integrated into the input signal. This visible representation of the audio information is updated in response to such data during the first operating mode of the television set. The control pathway responds to command codes provided by the user for selectable operation of the second operating mode of the television set, during which the output image signal, including the first and second image signal components, produces the area... The first and second aforementioned aspects of the image, and during which the updating of the visible representation of the audio information linked to the image information in response to such data is prevented, and where such control pathways consist of a decoder for extracting such data from the input signal and a second signal processor that receives the extracted data from the input signal during the first operating mode for modifying the first image signal component in response to such data received from the decoder for updating the visible representation of that part of the audio information, such control pathways respond to such command codes for protecting the second signal processor from modifying the first image signal component during the second operating mode of the television set. 2. The television set of claim 1, whereby such control mechanism prevents the second signal processor from receiving such data extracted from the said input signal during such second operating mode of the television set. 3. The television set of claim 2, which includes: memory for storing the data retrieved from the input signal by the decoder; a second signal processor that produces the first image signal component in response to the data stored in memory; a control pathway that responds to the instruction code for preventing the data retrieved from the input signal by the decoder from being stored in memory during the second operating mode of the television set. 4. The television set of claim 3, in which such memory consists of: a first memory for storing such data retrieved from such input signal by such decoder and a second memory; such control path that transfers data from such first memory to such second memory during such first operating mode; such second signal processor that responds to the data stored in such second memory for the production of such first image signal component; such control path that prevents such data retrieved from such input signal by such decoder from being stored in such first memory during such second operating mode of such television set. 5. The television set of claim 1, which includes a first memory unit for storing the data retrieved from the input signal by the decoder, and a second memory unit; the control path that transfers data from the first memory unit to the second memory unit during the first operating mode; the second signal processor that responds to the data stored in the second memory unit for the production of the first video signal component; and the control path that prevents the data stored in the first memory unit from being transferred to the second memory unit during the second operating mode of the television set. 6. The television set for processing input signals, including image information, audio information linked to such image information, and data representing such audio information, consists of memory for storing data; a signal processor for storing representative data of such image information in the first area of such memory; for storing representative data of such audio information in the second area of such memory; and for producing an output signal with the first signal component produced in response to such data stored in the first memory area, and a second signal component produced in response to such data stored in the second memory area; such output signal is suitable for matching with a display device for producing images with the first and second areas produced in response to such first and second signal components, respectively; such data stored in the first and second memory areas is modified in response to such input signals during the first operating mode of the television set for updating the first and second areas of the image; and a controller that responds to command codes provided by the user to operate the second operating mode of the television set, during which the modification of such data stored in the first and second memory areas is performed. The second aforementioned memory area that responds to the input signal is protected; in this way, it prevents the updating of the second aforementioned area of the image during the second operating mode; the output signal includes the first and second signal components for producing the first and second aforementioned areas of the image during the second operating mode, and the data stored in the first memory area is modified in response to the input signal. 7. The television set of claim number 6, where the controller responds to the second command code placed by the user for commanding the third operating mode of the television set, during which modification of the data stored in the first and second areas of the memory is prevented, thus preventing the updating of the first and second areas of the image during the third operating mode. 8. A television system consists of a display device and a first signal processor for processing input signals, including image information, audio information linked to the image information, and closed captioning data displayed as part of the audio information. This is used to produce an output image signal that is matched to the display device, producing an image with a first area displaying the image information included in the input signal. A switch responds to the control signal for including the image signal components in the output image signal. A second signal processor responds to the closed captioning data to produce the image signal components so that the image includes both the first area displaying the image information included in the input signal and a second area providing a visible representation of that part of the audio information when the image signal components are included in the output image signal. An input command path generates command codes in response to user commands, and a controller responds to these command codes to generate a control signal for the switch, which causes the switch to include the image signal components in the output image signal. In this way, the visible representation of that part of the audio information is produced in the second area of the display. The second signal processor is also protected. This is due to the update of the visible representative in response to the closed subtitle information, and where the second signal processor comprises the closed subtitle decoder for extracting the data incorporated into the input signal and for generating a second control signal indicating when that portion of the data has been extracted from memory; the on-screen display processor for generating the signal components in response to the data stored in memory; and where the controller responds to the second control signal for storing that portion of the data in memory; and where the controller responds to the instruction code for preventing the storage of that portion of the data in memory in response to the second control signal.
