A hard, enclosed sheath is also present. This sheath is sliding within the main body and, when pressed against the mammal, retracts into the main body, thus making direct contact with the needle and allowing it to penetrate the mammal. When the syringe is pushed into the main body, it contacts and expels the sheath from the main body, thus expelling the needle from the mammal. The syringe and pin then work together to propel the drug through the needle into the mammal. When the needle is withdrawn from the mammal, the drug is administered.
