Abstract

This invention relates to a structured system of paired absorbent lining/absorbent layers that effectively utilize absorbent materials, where the absorbent capacity of the lining is correlated with the absorbent capacity of the secondary layer of the absorbent structure, such as the absorbent layer itself. This invention finds that by precisely matching the absorbent capacity of the lining material with the absorbent capacity of the secondary layer, the liquid absorption of the lining and secondary layer exceeds the liquid absorption capacity of the secondary layer alone. Thus, according to one manifestation of this invention, the absorbent capacity of the lining is defined within a specific range of the secondary layer in a manner that improves the liquid absorption capacity of the lining/secondary layer. According to another manifestation, the absorbent capacity of the lining is paired with or correlated with the absorbent capacity of the secondary layer in such a way that the liquid absorption of the lining/secondary layer is improved by at least approximately 50 percent over the liquid absorption of the secondary layer alone. According to yet another manifestation, the absorbent capacity of the lining material is paired with or correlated with the absorbent capacity of the secondary layer. The characteristic is that the combined liquid absorption of the lining/substrate layer is at least approximately 65 percent greater than the liquid absorption of the substrate layer alone, as revealed here, by selecting a suitable absorption capacity of the lining material relative to the absorption capacity of the substrate material. The liquid absorption rate of the lining material not only limits or prevents liquid absorption into the substrate and adjacent areas of the absorbent structure, but also provides an unexpected increase in liquid absorption greater than that of the substrate layer alone. A well-formed lining and substrate can be a non-woven fabric.
