A sanitary pad that attaches to the crotch of underwear for the absorption of bodily fluids. Such a sanitary pad consists of (a) an absorbent pad containing absorbent material with longitudinal extensions. This absorbent material is contained between a permeable and impermeable barrier. The pad has a central section, a first longitudinal edge, and a second longitudinal edge spaced apart. These edges are flexible relative to the central section; and (b) a control device for controlling the flexibility of the first and second longitudinal edges of the pad during use. This control device consists of a first garment pad and a second garment pad spaced apart, which are attached to the first and second longitudinal edges, respectively. Each garment pad has a fixed section adjacent to the corresponding longitudinal edges and a free section extending downward and inward relative to each corresponding longitudinal edge. This includes fastening devices for securing the independent portion of the first garment patch to the independent portion of the second garment patch in order to enclose the first and second longitudinal edges and create the predetermined bends so that the first and second longitudinal edges are positioned no higher than the absorbent material.

The longitudinal edges of the absorbent pad, at least along its longitudinal center, flare out laterally to form a pair of first side plates, each with a body side and a garment side, and these plates extend sufficiently above the absorbent material so that, during use, they protrude and hang over and below the aforementioned side edges of the crotch area; and (b) a pair of opposing garment plates attached to the garment side of the absorbent pad so that, during use, the flexibility of the side edges of the absorbent pad can be selectively controlled.
