Abstract

1441549 Automatic control of temperature R F SHAW 21 May 1974 22592/74 Heading G3R [Also in Division A5] An automatic temperature control circuit 11 for maintaining the temperature of an electrically conductive element 13, which forms the tissuecutting edge of a surgical instrument, at a constant value in the range of 300-1000‹C, comprises a bridge circuit into one arm of which is connected said element, the bridge circuit having one pair of terminals connected through a control circuit to the secondary winding 27 of a transformer 29 and a second pair of terminals connected to a bridgebalance sensing circuit, said sensing circuit also being connected to the control circuit to alter the electrical current applied to the bridge circuit when the temperature of element 13 alters resulting in a change in its resistance which unsettles the bridge. The control circuit comprises rectifiers 21, 23 the conduction angle of which is increased to increase the power applied to element 13 if the temperature thereof is below a set value. If the temperature of the element is above the set value, the power supplied to the element 13 is decreased until the set value is reached. Alternatively, the signal from a thermocouple sensor on or near the element may be used to control the power supplied to the element.
