Description
Thermite mixtures containing barium compounds (oxide, peroxide, aluminate, etc.) and reducing agents are known as getters and activators of oxide cathodes in the electrovacuum technique. (mainly aluminum), from which metallic barium is produced by heating in vacuum.
For the same purpose, it is known to use barium alloys with another metal, such as aluminum, from which barium can be evaporated by heating in vacuum; Such alloys are highly resistant to air. The main difficulty in using such barium sources in vacuum devices consists in obtaining a mixture (for example, compressed into tablets) that is sufficiently stable in air during the manufacture of the product before the air is pumped out of it. At the same time, this mixture must have suitable activity in terms of ease of recoil and percentage of barium output from it. These circumstances are particularly important in the production of barium cathode tubes, where barium evaporating from the tablet mixture serves as an activator of the cathode. Depending on the metal lamp used for the anode, the amount and composition of gases evolved from it when heated in vacuum, changes the conditions of evaporation of the barn from the tablet. Therefore, in this case it is very important to be able to facilitate the evaporation of the barium of the mixture without reducing its stability in air. This is particularly important when attempting to replace nickel for anodes with iron and steel.
The authors claim that they managed to find a way to solve this problem, which gives a new technical effect in terms of facilitating the production of barium from thermite mixtures without significantly altering the stability of tablets of these mixtures in air.
This method consists in using as a reducing agent a thermite mixture containing barium oxygen compounds (oxide, peroxide, aluminate, etc.), individually or in a mixture, of an aluminum alloy with barium. In this case, an aluminum alloy enters with a barium oxygen compound in a chemical reaction, in which metallic barium is formed.
Thus, it is possible to have a significantly increased barium yield without significantly reducing the stability of the tablet in air, since the alloys of barium with aluminum, with

The barium-aluminum alloy introduced into tablets can be obtained directly by melting the pure components of barium and aluminum, followed by crushing to a powder. However, as a result of reaction in vacuum, for example, barium oxide with an excess of aluminum, it can be prepared more easily. The mass obtained by B as a result of this reaction contains an alloy of barium with an excess of aluminum, as well as inert substances — alumina or aluminate. In the matter of mass, with proper selection of the composition of the initial mixture, it is rather stable in air and easily turns into a powder, in the form of which it can be added to the mixture.
