Description
The preparation of ethanol by catalytic hydration of ethylene is of great interest, however, despite the extensive patent literature in this field, the method has not yet found industrial application. Apparently, most of the proposed catalysts do not possess sufficient activity.
Very active catalysts, in the presence of which the temperature optimum of the reaction sharply decreases and alcohol is formed almost without impurities, is obtained by preparing them according to the method of the present invention. The method consists in the treatment of basic copper carbonate with phosphoric acid. Most smoothly, without side reactions, ethylene hydration occurs in the presence of a catalyst, which contains 1 mole of phosphoric acid per 1 mole of copper oxide. Basic copper carbonate can be obtained from a soluble copper salt by precipitation with water-soluble carbonates. The precipitated blue colloidal precipitate of copper carbonate is left in the presence of the mother liquor until it completely turns into green crystalline basic copper carbonate. After washing, the basic copper carbonate is treated with phosphoric acid at 120-200 °. The resulting paste is molded and dried at 95-100 °. Natural malachite can also be used as the main copper carbonate.
The catalyst thus obtained loses its mechanical strength during the operation and is disintegrated into powder. The strength of the catalyst can be significantly increased by depositing it on a carrier, as which pumice or other silicates can be used.
The addition to the catalyst obtained by the described method, 5–20% of some organic substances that easily decompose under the reaction conditions, for example, glucose, increases the activity of the catalyst, increases its lifetime, and in some cases can increase the mechanical strength of the catalyst during work.
Example 1. To a solution of 483.2 g of copper nitrate acid was added a solution of 572.2 g of soda. Precipitation
95-100°.ileft in the presence of the mother liquor for 18 hours, then filtered and washed. The resulting basic copper carbonate was heated at ISOMO for 1 hour with phosphoric acid, taken at the rate of 1 mole for each mole of copper. The resulting paste is molded and dried at 95-100 ° .i

Transmission Speed | gas mixture 1600 liters of gas in normal conditions per 1 liter of catalyst per hour. Alcohol output 140-150 g. Per 1 liter of catalyst per hour.
240-250 Example 2. The catalyst described in example 1, during the processing of basic copper carbonate phos; fororic acid is added 10%; glucose. Optimum temperature; reaction decreases to 240-250
450The rest of the process conditions have not changed. The yield of alcohol is 160-170 g per 1 liter of catalyst per hour. This catalyst was tested for 450
часов, причем снижени его активности не наблюдалось.hours, and a decrease in its activity was not observed.
2.Example 3. The catalyst described in example 2 was applied on pumice stone in an amount by weight of the carrier. Reaction conditions are similar to those in Example 2.
Alcohol output 120-130 g per 1 liter of catalyst per hour. After work, no mechanical deformation of the catalyst was observed.
