Description
The proposed method aims to obtain novolac and rezol-alkyd resins for the preparation of pressing products and laminates from them.
The method consists in that phenol or cresols are condensed with aldehydes in the ratios required for the preparation of novolac, then the novolac resins are dissolved in glycerol, glycol, erythritol or pentaerythritol; while free phenol can be distilled under a strong vacuum. A further operation is the esterification of a polyhydric alcohol with a polybasic acid.
In order to reduce the reaction temperature, the latter can be carried out in the presence of catalysts, for example, hydrochloric acid. As a result of esterification, a mixture of novolac and alkyd resin is obtained, containing free phthalic anhydride and glycerin, to remove which the resin is washed with bicarbonate soda in the presence of sodium chloride or water in the presence of emulsifiers. The washing is carried out until the resin has a minimum acid number. The resulting resin will be a hot melt. To convert a resin to a thermoset, it must be treated with formaldehyde (in the form of formalin, paraform or hexamethylene tetramine). After treatment with the above reagents, a resin is obtained which can be used for the manufacture of molding products, laminates and varnishes. The complex resins obtained by this method can be combined with cellulose ethers. To this end, cellulose ethers are dissolved either in phenols, before condensing them with aldehydes, or in polybasic acids that fuse with novolac, or in a mixture of novolacs with polybasic acids.
Example. 4 moles of phenol are condensed with 3 moles of formaldehyde in the presence of sh.avitel acid.
100 в. ч. NaCl.100 in. the resulting novolak type resin was fused with 100 volts. including glycerol and then 50 volts is added to the alloy. phthalic anhydride and carry out the esterification. The resulting resin is washed with water with an emulsifier or a solution of NaHCOa in the presence of NaCl.
The washed resin should have an acid number of 10-15. The melting point lies within wide limits.
The distinguishing features of the proposed method are: 1) the formation of an alkyd resin with an excess of glycerol in the presence of novolak, 2) removal of phthalic anhydride, phthalic acid and glycerin by washing with water with emulsifiers or weak alkali, 3) transforming the hot-melt complex resin into a thermo-reactive by formaldehyde or its derivatives.
The combination of alkyd resin and novolac makes it possible to condense with an excess of glycerol and to remove phthalic anhydride and glycerol by washing with water or weak alkali. According to the proposed method, it is possible to obtain both hot and soluble resins, and thermosetting resins.
