Description

Known ionization vacuum lamps with a thermal cathode have at least three electrodes: a cathode, an anode, and an ion collector. The lower limit of the pressures measured by such lamps is determined by the value of the background current of the photoelectrons emitted by the collector, which appear as a result of irradiating the collector with soft X-rays arising from the deceleration of electrons on the anode surface.

In the described ionization manometer, the effect of photoelectric emission from the collector is excluded, due to which it is possible to expand the lower limits of pressure measured by a manometric device. Positive pulses are applied to the anode of a diode lamp under a constant negative potential relative to the cathode. In this case, the flow of electrons coming from the cathode to the anode ionizes the gas. Upon termination of a pulse, positive ions produced in a lamp volume connected to a controlled volume will go to the anode, which is at a negative potential. The magnitude of the pressure is judged by the amplitude of the ion current generating the signal on the oscilloscope screen.

When the anode is under negative voltage, there is no anode current, and therefore no X-ray radiation, which causes the photoelectric current.
