F / 1 The invention relates to technical electronics, in particular to the prevention of cathodes from the harmful effects of residual gases, and is intended primarily for use in electron microscopy. The purpose of the invention is protection of the cathode from the effects of residual gases. The invention is illustrated in the drawing, which shows a cathode assembly comprising a source of electrons 1 in the form of a metal tip and a dielectric 2 surrounding the source of electrons 1 and forming a channel for the exit of electrons. In this way, the effect on the ions of the residual gas by an electron beam passing through the dielectric channel is selected, and the emission current of the cathode is chosen based on the condition of the magnitude of the force acting on the ions from the electric field to the force resulting from the ion-electron friction. This condition is given by the relation; .. to - 4 R- m -A.-S where j is the current density at the end of the axis; R is the channel length; the length of the tip of the cathode; the intensity of the floor on the tip; effective area of the gas ion; average electron energy in the channel; coefficient, numerically equal to 1 s. The method is carried out as follows. The cathode assembly is evacuated; inert gas is injected to a pressure of 10 Torr. A voltage is applied to the electron source 1 and the ion channel is cleaned of possible contaminants, and an inert gas is pumped out. The source 1 is supplied with a negative voltage, which causes autoelectron emission from it. As a result of the effect of the electron beam on the ions, they are rejected and thereby the emitting surface is preserved. As an example, a tungsten autocathode placed in a glass capillary with a channel length of 2 cm was tested. Testing showed that when using the cathode assembly in a vacuum head (GO Thor) it is possible to almost completely protect the cathode from bombardment.
