The invention relates to the manufacture of light alloys containing refractory and easily acidifying alloying additives. With the usual method of doping magnesium or its alloys with thorium and zirconium, considerable loss of the latter occurs and contamination of the alloyed alloy with chlorides, which reduces their corrosion resistance.
The described method of introducing thorium and zirconium into magnesium and magnesium alloys in the form of metal master alloys reduces the loss of alloying elements and improves the quality of the alloys produced. This is achieved by; that a double thorium-zirconium ligature containing about 25% zirconium is used for doping, which makes it possible to significantly reduce the temperature of alloy production. In order to better assimilate the ligature with the molten metal or alloy, it is introduced in the form of chips or briquettes from chips. A ligature containing tori and 25% zirconium, is pre-melted in an electric arc furnace under vacuum using a consumable or tungsten electrode. Melting ligatures carried out by conventional methods. When working with a tungsten electrode, the original thorium and zirconium are turned into chips, briquettes are made from the chips of these metals, and then they are loaded into an electric furnace. The melting point of the ligature of the indicated composition is significantly lower than the melting point of the thorium and zirconium, as a result of which the doping of magnesium or its alloys with the zirconium-thorium ligature of the said composition produces the total amount at T50. At the same time, not less than 80% of thorium and 50% of zirconium contained in the ligature passes into the alloy, i.e. the loss of these metals is much lower than with the commonly used methods of doping magnesium and magnesium alloys with these metals.
