Abstract

A keel structure in a wraparound carton comprises a number of keel elements (K) which separate one row of containers from another row within the carton. Each keel element has spaced upstanding panels (P,32; Pa,32a) against which containers held in the carton abut. Each of the upstanding panels is spaced from the other by a platform (P1, P1a) defined by curved edges extending towards one another permitting adjacent portions of each of said upstanding panel means to be flexed inwardly toward the other to receive a wall portion of an adjacent container.

Description

The present invention relates to a keel structure in a wrapper-type wrapper formed from cardboard or the like of a foldable layer and to the location of containers arranged in parallel rows.

BACKGROUND OF THE INVENTION

The keel structure a structure that may have many keel elements in the overwrapping carton to be continuous or which separate one row of type may comprise containers from the other inside the carton.

SUMMARY OF THE INVENTION

The present invention provides a keel structure in the type of overwrapping carton that includes a plurality of keel elements that separate one row of containers from the other inside the carton, each keel having spaced apart upright means relative to the respective part means adjacent to the container, wherein the upright member means are spaced apart by a platform connected to each of the upright member means to allow the adjacent portions of each of said upright member means to be folded inwardly toward the next upright member means to allow the container wall to fit more tightly to the keel element.

According to a feature of the present invention, the platform of each keel element may be hinged spaced apart into each pair of upright portions, but otherwise is non-attached thereto, and wherein said platform interconnects said pair of upright means to provide a web-like bridge. In assemblies where this feature is accepted, the first upright portion of said pair may provide a resilient front of the keel and may coincide with the hinged positions between the first member and said platform, and wherein the second upright portion may provide opposing, a flexible front side of said keel element and may extend beyond said suspension positions between said upright member and said platform. Preferably, in these assemblies, said second upright portion is a single, substantially continuous portion common to a plurality of similar hernia elements and securing one edge of the blank of said carton.

According to a further feature of the present invention, said platform may be extruded from said second upright.

According to yet another feature of the present invention, a pair of portions of said means of the upright portion may be extruded from the base of the carton and said platform therein is extruded from one of the upright portions.

According to yet another feature of the present invention, the platform may be defined by curved edges extending towards one another.

The portions of at least one of said upright portions adjacent said curved edge of said platform are preferably separable so that these portions can be more easily bent.

Examples

Fig. 1 illustrates a blank of a wrapping-type carton 10 formed from cardboard or a similar foldable layer material. The keel elements K are formed in rows in one of the parts of the base of the carton blank. The blank 10 comprises a plurality of joined portions comprising a first base portion 12, a first side wall portion 14, an upper part 16, a second side wall portion 18, and a second base portion 20 folded one after the other along the cross fold lines 22, 24, 26 and 28 in order.

Each of the keel elements in the base member 12 is similar in construction and shown in more detail in FIG. 1a and FIG. 2, the latter showing the keel element in its erect form. The keel element K comprises a bridge-like structure comprising an upright part P and a platform PI suspended together along the short hinge lines h and hl. The upright part is hinged to the part hinged to & h4, according to the hinged bend 34.

The upright part P and the partition part are each formed by slots or groove marks adjacent the slots S and S1 so that portions of the part adjacent these slots are separable and can be relatively easily folded around adjacent hinged parts. Thus, the upright portion P may be bent inwardly toward the platform by folding between its hinged joints in the support platform into the space defined by the curved edge C of the support platform. Similarly, the bulkhead portion immediately adjacent to the slot 51 may be bent inwardly from its hinged connections to the platform into a space defined by the same opposed curved edge C1 of the platform. Other keel elements K1-K3 have the same features. In some cases, it is contemplated that the slit or score line 51 may be omitted.

As best seen in FIG. 2, when the blank is wrapped on the base 12 along the hinge line h2 and the platform P1 is part of the support bar 32 at the hinge joints h3 of that order. The support partition 32 is a base portion 12 along a dashed line around a group of containers Cn to form a carton Ct, one row of containers is aligned adjacent the partition portion 32 and another row of containers to the upright portions P of the keel elements K-K4 so that each container is arranged at its wall adjacent to either the part of the bulkhead or the upright element P of a keel element. Because of the folding provided in both the bulkhead part and the upright part of the keel structure, the containers adjacent to these parts of the keel structure make it possible to settle and be more closely held against the adjacent, curved edge of the PI platform to improve retention between the keel members containers in adjacent rows so as to counteract the release of these containers.

In this embodiment, the partition panel PI is in the form of a massively continuous, uniform edge panel that is folded out from the workpiece plane to an upright position. In the modified configuration of FIG. 3 and 4, the bulkhead part is replaced by several individual bulkhead parts, one for each keel element.

In the embodiment of FIG. 3 and 4, parts such as those in the preceding embodiment are designated with the same reference numerals with the addition of a "," although in this case the keel elements are printed from the base panel 20a. Thus, each keel element Ka comprises an upright part Pa having a slit or groove line S to facilitate folding of the part towards the curved edge Ca of its support platform Pla. In this embodiment, the bulkhead piece is not continuous as previously described, but an individual piece 32a is associated with each keel element Ka and is hinged to the base piece 20a along the broken fold line 36. Compared to an object that is defined by the features of said independent claims, said document discloses a keel structure in a wrapping carton to separate one row of containers from the other row within the carton. Each keel element has spaced upright means opposed to the respective part means adjacent to a container, said upright means being spaced apart by a platform, the platform being attached to each of said upright components to enable this. bending the adjacent portions of each of said upright means inwardly toward the opposite upright means to allow the adjacent container wall to engage more tightly against said keel feature, wherein said platform is extruded from one of said upright means (cf. 3 of EP-A-0 661 947; see inwardly diverging portions 31, 311). The respective dependent claims do not define novelty or inventive steps in the light of the prior art. With this in mind, the applicant is referred to in FIG. 3 of EP-A-0 461 947 (compare with the features of claims 2-9 and 12) and of Figures 1 and 2 of US-A-4 703 847 (compare with claims 4-7, 9 and 11).
