Za označevanje lesa so poznani številni postopki, med drugimi tudi Signumat. Postopek sloni na označevanju posameznih kosov lesa s plastičnimi, lesenimi ali metalnimi ploščami. Plošče so trajno pritrjene na les. Plošče so opremljene z grafičnimi, črkovnimi in/ali številskimi znaki, ki identifikacijo predmet, na katerega je plošča pritrjena. V splošnem so plošče označene z zaporedno številko pridobljenega lesa in s kodiranim znakom, ki označuje izvor materiala. Poljska patentna prijava številka P314955 opisuje pravokotno ploščo s pritrdili v obliki žebljičkov. Na strani z informacijo je plošča opremljena tudi z vogalnimi pritrdili za pritrditev plošče na kladivo ali drugo pritrjevalno sredstvo. Element za označevanje po EP 0 460 256 ima pritrdila postavljena pravokotno na telo plošče in vzporedno s krajšim robom plošče. V poznanih oblikah elementov za označevanje so pritrjevala za pritrditev plošče na tehnični les postavljene v bližino krajšega roba plošče in vzporedno k njemu.
