Abstract

A bark-free part of the log is analysed using a spectrometric technique and the resulting data is compared with reference data for known logs. A method for identifying the type of wood in a log or trunk during timber sorting comprises analysing a bark-free part of the log using a spectrometric technique that generates spectral data, and comparing this data with reference spectral data obtained from reference logs. The reference spectral data has been calibrated according to the type of wood in the reference log using a multiple variable analysis technique.
