Abstract

The method is for protection of a wind turbine, particularly of the Savonius(RTM) type (1), and involves a rotor (2) with an electrical generator (7) driven via a transmission (8) and supporting a framework (3), which can comprise a stay (3a) and acting against overloading at high wind speeds. The protection also acts against other faults which may occur such as runaway rotation of the rotor or faults in the electrical mains to which the turbine is connected. The turbine is provided with a brake device (10) and monitoring and breaker components (21-23,26) which form an unbroken relay chain during the operation of the turbine. The chain is broken and activates the brake device for bringing the rotor to a stationary state and disconnects the electrical generator from the mains when the pre-selected highest wind speed is exceeded or another fault occurs.
