Abstract

Manufacture of a medical device, which presents a hydrophilic surface coated elongate shaft for insertion into a body passageway, comprises: having the elongate shaft formed from a thermoplastic elastomer material comprising a polyether block amide or a styrene block copolymer; and forming the hydrophilic coating on the shaft by sequentially applying to the surface (i) a solution containing 0.05-40 wt./vol. % isocyanate compound, and (ii) a solution containing 0.5-50 wt./vol. % polyvinylpyrrolidone, and curing at an elevated temperature. Also claimed are: such a medical device formed by this method; such a medical device in which the shaft is provided with a hydrophilic outer surface coating formed from an interpenetrating network of polyvinylpyrrolidone and polyurea, or the shaft is provided with a polyvinylpyrrolidone hydrophilic outer surface coating having enhanced osmolality; and use of a styrene block copolymer in the manufacture of such a medical device.
