Abstract
A process for separating impurities from effluent water comprises feeding the water from eg. a sewage works, containing sand, soil, gravel, stone, paper or similar material, into a narrow conduit (10). The heavy material in the water is removed directly via a spiral region (4) to a first motor-driven screw conveyor (5) without it coming into contact with the screen used to remove lighter material. From here the heavy material is fed into a second motor-driven screw conveyor (6), for dewatering (7) and subsequent disposal or cleaning. The light material is initially delivered to a fixed screen (1) and then to a moving screen (2), the filtered material deposited on the fixed screen being forced down between the collapsed rods in the moving screen. These rods are collapsed as the screen moves upwards, enabling the filtered material to pass down through the screen and into a positionable press (3), where its weight is increased. Filtered material is removed stepwise from the press into the first screw conveyor for removal with the heavy material. The apparatus used for this process is also claimed.
