Abstract

An ultrasonic device (16) mounted in the timber cutting part of the harvesting machine works in conjunction with a sensor (21) in contact with the trunk, transmitting signals to a receiver for detecting any cracks present or being formed during the cutting process. The timber harvesting machine includes grab devices for gripping the tree trunk, a cutting device for felling the tree and cutting up the trunk, and a drive unit for transporting the trunk through the cutting device in order to cut the timber into logs, wood chips or other valuable timber products.
