Abstract

The charge (5) is an electrically conductive powder, initiated by passing an electrical current through it between a central electrode (8) extending in an axial direction through the charge, and a mantle-like outer electrode (9) that surrounds the charge. At least part of one or both of the electrodes has an insulation layer (12) to insulate the electrode from the charge. During combustion of the charge the insulation for the electrode(s) is removed at a controlled speed towards the end (7) of the charge opposite to the end (6) where the charge is initiated. The removal of the insulation is achieved by detonating an explosive material extending in a spiral through the insulated part of the electrode(s).
