Abstract

A telephone call is received by a control and reader unit (1) where the telephone number or another characteristic property of the call is read in an identifying unit (7), which determines whether the call is from an authorized telephone or not. Unauthorized callers are diverted to an external telephone or fax machine (5), whilst authorized callers are coupled via a switch (4) to a catalogue compartment (9) in the identifying unit. The catalogue compartment opens a channel from the authorized number to the current memory area (10) in the memory (11) of e.g. a computer, and a command signal is sent from this current memory area to the memory in order to establish whether this area is actually accessible. Information stored in the memory is then sent via a signal adaptor to e.g. a modem (12) or device for recording/playing back digital sound, via e.g. the receiver of the authorized telephone (13) making the call. - An INDEPENDENT CLAIM is also included for the device used to identify the telephone number and link authorized callers to the stored information.
