Abstract

Modified phenol-formaldehyde resin and a process of making said resin. the resin comprises cationic groups and has a cationicity of 2-95 %, preferably 15-60 %. The resin is suitably a modified resole made from a phenolic compound, such as a phenol, a cresole, an alkylphenol and/or a sulphur derivative thereof, and formaldehyde at a molar ratio of 1:1 to 1:3.5, a temperature of 40-100 DEG C and a pH exceeding APPROX 8. The process is carried out in an aqueous medium and in the presence of ammonia or an amine as combined catalyst and reactant, whereby anionic groups are introduced into the resin.
