Abstract
A method for separating particles from a contaminated gas is used to prevent a reduction in corona current between the emission and precipitation electrodes in an electrostatic separator. In this separator, a gas flows between an inlet (1) and outlet (2) through one or more separator units (3a, 3b) arranged in series, each unit being divided into one or more gas flow channels by the essentially parallel rows of vertical precipitation electrodes, between which the emission electrodes are also arranged in one or more essentially parallel rows, creating a flow of contaminated gas which is parallel to the rows of emission electrodes. In at least the separator inlet region, the emission electrodes are partly surrounded by a gas with a lower contaminant content than the incoming gas. The method comprises removing a partial flow (4) of at least partially purified gas and returning to the separator inlet where it is mixed with the incoming contaminated gas directly upstream from the emission electrodes in order to create a curtain of relatively uncontaminated gas around these electrodes. The electrostatic separator used in the above method is also claimed, containing a feed device positioned directly upstream from the emission electrodes for supplying the partial flow of relatively uncontaminated gas, which includes an essentially vertical channel with one or more openings in it facing one or more of the emission electrodes.
