Abstract

The device for braking and splitting the primary flow of hot melt supplied to the casting mould, and for controlling the flow of melt in non-solidified portions of a cast strand formed during passage through the cooled mould which is open at both ends, comprises: (a) water box beams (51,52) around the casting mould for supporting and cooling the casting mould; and (b) magnetic brake generating at least one static or periodic low-frequency magnetic field operating in the inflowing melt path. The brake comprises at least one magnet (71,72) for magnetic field generation, at least one core (81,82) for transmission of the generated magnetic field to the casting mould containing the cast strand, and at least one magnetic return path for closing the magnetic circuit comprising the magnet, core, return path and, in addition, the casting mould and cast strand. At least part of the water box beams (51,52) comprises a magnetically conducting material (510,520). The magnet (71,72) is arranged in a recess (91,92) in the water box beam (51,52). The magnetically conducting material is part of the magnetic return path and/or the core. Both the magnet (71,72) and the magnetic return path are integrated entirely inside the rear wall of a water box beam (51,52). Also claimed is the operation of the device when the casting mould is supplied with melt from a casting pipe with at least one opening (21) opening out below the melt surface.
