Abstract

A method for removing packing from a stuffing box involves the use of a milling tool whose cutting head is comprised of a plastic material, preferably a fibre-reinforced plastic material, chosen so as not to damage or score the surface of the stuffing-box spindle (2), which is normally comprised of hardened steel. The tool (10) is preferably connected to a tool drive through the medium of an angle gear (11) which facilitates tool access to the packing and which forms a handle or a handle attachment. The inventive tool comprises a milling tool which is made of material that is substantially softer than the spindle, so as not to damage the spindle when coming into contact therewith during a milling operation. The milling tool is conveniently comprised of fibre-reinforced plastic, such as an epoxy resin reinforced with fiberglass.
